Gamification – An e-learning tool for kids

One of the most difficult tasks a teacher faces in the classroom is keeping students interested and motivated to learn. Gamification of education is an approach that incorporates gaming aspects into an educational environment to address these difficulties. These are mostly online tools that use multimedia resources to replicate game-like scenarios to teach the school curriculum. 

Gamification is intended to target the same level of engagement in classrooms as those found in games, using game-like rules and player experiences to shape students’ behavior. However, in order to fully grasp the potential of gamification, we must explore how these strategies can be used in practice to benefit kids. Let’s examine three important areas where gamification can be useful in education:

  1. Cognitive development: Playing games allows players to discover complex rules through active trial and error. They also help gamers accustom themselves to difficult activities by guiding them through the learning process. Using these strategies in the classroom can help students develop logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. 
  2. Experiential learning: The experiential learning process involves students learning by doing and then reflecting on the experience, allowing them to engage intellectually, creatively, emotionally, socially, or physically. Gamification is one of the best sources of experiential learning for students, where children learn lessons by actual participation and gain valuable experiences.
  3. Emotional development:  When one fails at a game, they can feel a variety of emotions, from curiosity to frustration to excitement and also despair. Gamification reinforces failure as just an aspect of learning, with an option to retry the activity multiple times. Instead of feeling helpless, afraid, or overwhelmed, students can learn to perceive failure as an opportunity and work harder to achieve next time.

Despite the above-mentioned benefits, schools and gamification don’t always complement one another. Gamification isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. If we want to increase the chances of gamification providing value to schools, we need to carefully design gamification projects that address real-world school challenges.
